Recently, Talis have undertaken a review of market needs and requirements for a home delivery service. This would enable borrowers to pay for a service that would allow them to request that physical items be delivered to their home rather than them coming into the library in order to pick up the material. This review has been a very useful exercise and has given us a great opportunity to consider what we can do to help libraries both in the short term - using existing products and to gather information about future requirements in this area.

We asked for customers interested in this to contact us and the feedback was that there only a small number of libraries interested in this at this moment in time. There was a mix of both academic and public libraries but the needs from these sectors appear to vary. Academic libraries want to implement a service to distance learners and sometimes part-time students whereas the vision for some public libraries is to implement a service similar to online DVD services such as LOVEFiLM. Most of the libraries that we spoke to are at early stages in thinking about how this could work for them and the costs and benefits that would be associated with such a service. They were some way off implementation.
Based on this, we have offered the customers a strategy to help them implement a small-scale solution based upon existing functionality. This solution is limited and it uses existing reservation functionality to allow borrowers to request that an item be delivered to their home rather than to a collection site. We also set up this forum for customers to use to share experiences. We are hoping too that this will also enable us to continue to monitor and review the requirements and market demand around this.

The conclusion of this project has been not to prioritise any development work in this area until we see further demand. This has been an interesting and informative review and we will continue to review this area - particularly with customers who have some interesting, visionary ideas for further changes. If you would like further information on home delivery, please contact your Account Manager.

Best wishes and thank you to everyone who has been involved for their time and research.
