Has anyone any experience or thoughts regarding the use of Self-service when the link to Talis is not available, i.e. something like a self-service machine version of Assure?

Someone mentioned this to me - I admit it has never struck me that such a thing would be desirable.

I think it would be very desirable. At some branches we now have so many self-service machines and so few staff that if the system goes down at peak periods it is difficult to serve everyone. Once we open a new branch offering 24/7 access which will be unstaffed (apart from security) for a significant part of the time, we won't be able to issue/return anything if the system/network is down.

We also would be very interested in this as we are open Sundays with only Security and student IT support, so everything has to be done via the self-issue machine. If the network is not available nothing can be issued or renewed. (There are no library staff on duty therefore the issue desk is closed.)

I agree with earlier comments - we are increasing the use of self service opening hours - particularly at weekends when our network people tend to do their maintenance work - so a self service Assure would be very useful
