In the SIP2 config file for 3M self-service machines, there is a parameter TAL_SELF_MESSAGE_LEVEL.

Does this control issues only, or returns only, or both?

Issues only unfortunately :(

We have recently moved from the original SIP2 server to the new Selfserv and Talis were able to add a custom alert for us based on item messages of 2 or greater.

I first would like to thank Andy for his reply and also add that the feature "Alert for item messages at discharge" - see page 8 of the Release Notice of SelfServ1.2 available here:

http://www.talis.com/services/documentation/whats_new.shtml

is more flexible. It can be configured to satisfy any item alert condition and not only one that is functionally dependent on TAL_SELF_MESSAGE_LEVEL. For example, alert when the discharged item has message x or y or when the item is due to be rotated to another library, etc.

We took this decision because we couldn't know in advance all the possible alert conditions for all selfserv customers. When we feel sure that we know the full set of these conditions, we will extend the configuration accordingly.

The standard alert conditions at discharge are:

1)The item is reserved at the site of return
2)The item is reserved at a different site
3)The item belongs to another site
4) The discharged item is an ILL

Regards,

Zak
